Researchers identified a brain region - the left dorsal mid-insula - that responds similarly in people with a range of mental health conditions including depression, anxiety, and anorexia. This region is thought to play a role in interoception (perception of signals from within the body).
The most vital quandary of mental health disorders and therapies today is not whether they change the brain but how.
New research on interoception helps us understand how people with mental health conditions feel physical signals differently. Understanding the part of the brain that perceives interoception can help develop better treatments for mental illnesses.
